There was a lot of discussion at the Chicago Sword Show about the new shinsa process which I thought I would highlight here.
Examination process
Our association’s examination of swords, sword accessories, and sword accessories is ranked into four levels: “Hpzon,” “Tokubetsu Hozon,” “Juyo,” and “Tokubetsu Juyo.”

Juyo sword examination | Examination is conducted once a year *Application conditions: Must have passed the special preservation examination by the month of examination. *If the applicant passes the examination, the applicant’s name and address will be published on the designation form, sword art, the association’s website, and other media. |
Examination of Tokubetsu Juyo swords, etc. | Examination is conducted once every two years *Application conditions: Pass the important examination by the examination month. *If the applicant passes the examination, the applicant’s name and address will be published on the designation form, sword art, the association’s website, and other media. |
STEP 1
Pre-application
Pre-application
Advance application is required to submit for review. The advance application method is either ① Internet application or ② Written application.
*If you have not applied in advance, we will not be able to accept the application even if you bring or send the property on the screening day.
*Please use either online application or paper application. If multiple applications for the same property are submitted, both applications may not be accepted.
*There is a maximum number of preservation/special preservation examination applications for each advance application method. Detail ishere.
*There is a maximum number of Hozon/Tokubetsu Hozon Shinsa applications for each advance application method.

① For online application

(1) Please access
the dedicated site ( https://nbthk.touken.or.jp/Member/register/temp/new ) and complete the registration procedure. English here (2) Please log in to the examination application page ( https://nbthk.touken.or.jp/Member/login ) and apply in advance for the property to be submitted for examination within the application period. * Internet application period: From the 1st (10 a.m.) to the 25th of the month prior to the screening reception (3) Once you complete the advance application, you will be able to download the reservation number notification. Please print out the reservation number notification and submit it (bring it to the counter or send it to the counter) along with the property to be screened on the day of screening.
②For written applications
(1) Fill out the necessary information on the examination application form and send it to our association’s pre-examination application reception desk within the application period.
*Document application period: From the 1st to the 7th of the month prior to the examination reception (postmarks within the period are valid)
*The application period is short because our association will register the application.
*If there is anything attached to the property you are applying for, please be sure to clearly state it on the application form. Our association is not responsible for any information that is not filled out.

(2) After receiving the screening application form, we will register the application and send a reservation number notification to the designated address. (3) Please submit the reservation number notification (bring it to the counter or send it) along with the property to be screened on the day of the screening.
